There are many myths that developed in the community related to asthma. Some of them can indeed be explained by common sense, although many do not even make sense.
In a talk show with the media to commemorate World Asthma Day 2010 held at the Hotel Ibis Arcadia Jakarta Jl Wahid Hashim, Prof. Dr. Faisal Yunus, Ph.D., Sp.P. (K) reveals there are at least two myths that it is true.
The first myth is that going to sea to cure asthma. According to Prof. Faisal, the myth is true because in the sea air is cleaner than the air in urban areas. The lack of pollution make a good sea breeze for people with asthma.
Actually clean the air in the mountains as well, but the whether tends to cool. In some patients with asthma, the whether is too cold can trigger an attack so that the sea is more often 'myth' compared to the mountains.
The second myth is that swimming can cure asthma. Related to this, Professor. Faisal mentions three reasons why swimming well for asthma. Not just swimming, all sports that can be done slowly and gradually basically good for asthma.
In his presentation, Prof. Faisal actually had mentioned another myth is that asthma is a hereditary disease. Although it does not justify it, he revealed that 30-40 percent of asthma is triggered by hereditary factors.
There are people who feel their parents do not have a history of asthma. But it could be any of her grandparents who have the asthma, or even his own parents actually have. It's just that the symptoms do not arise because there are no triggers.
Other myths are of course many, perhaps even growing. According to Prof. Faisal, the most important in addressing these myths was to scrutinize the evidence. For a growing paradigm in health today is evidence based (based on the evidence).
There is a myth that swallowing a rat pups 7 red still can cure asthma. Perhaps there is indeed recovered in that way. But if it happens only 1 in 100, then the myth that cannot be justified.
