To observe to do with sleep patterns, the scientists studied 100 volunteers-sex male and female with an age range 45 to 80 years. All volunteers have a dementia, but 50 percent of whom had a history of dementia in the family.
For 14 days, all participants sleeping patterns observed by researchers. Any kind of sleep-related complaints are recorded in great detail, including complaints difficult to fall asleep and how often awakened in the middle of the night.
In addition, the participants also underwent a brain scan to see the myeloid plaque deposits. Plaque is one early sign of Alzheimer's disorder, which began to form about 10 or 15 years before dementia.
results showed that participant who did not sleep well tend to have more myeloid plaque deposits. This means that the possibility for dementia due to Alzheimer's bigger and can strike at a younger age than others.
"We find if people are waking up to more than 5 times per hour, that person has Alzheimer's disease precinct or not yet visible symptoms," said Yo-El Ju, MD, who led the study as quoted by WebMD.
